Cedar siding, shakes and shingles are a beautiful treatment to the exterior of a home. But left untreated they will start to curl from drying out, they will blacken from the suns harsh UV rays and water will slowly seep into the pores of the wood and cause the grain to expand, crack and splinter.

Left untreated you may spend more to replace sections of wood as well as additional preparation in order to properly prepare the surface to be coated. We only use the highest quality materials and stains, never paint on cedar surfaces.

This home was only a year old. The builder said that the siding was fine untreated. The owners were concerned because they saw the damage the sun caused from being untreated. They also did not want to loose the beauty of the natural wood.

You can see the discoloration when we removed the shutters as well as the "sun burn" at the gable.

We cleaned the siding and brought back the uniform color to the wood, then applied a transparent stain to allow the natural beauty of the wood to show through.

A home with this type of finish should be re-coated every 5-7 years depending on the quality of the coating used and exposure to the sun.
