Prospect Hall mansion

IMG_3648[1] In May 2015 we were contacted by a general contractor to take over the exterior renovation of the historic Prospect hall mansion off of butterfly lane in Frederick. The mansion was originally built around 1787 and was known as “Red Hill” the highest elevation in Frederick, Maryland.

The construction was completed in 1810 and is a three story Greek revival style with Federal elements. The home hosted presidents George Washington to Harry Truman.

The structure is all brick construction, the massive columns are all brick with stucco covered for the round appearance. The home was always white and originally painted with a mixture of white lead powder, linseed oil, Japan dryers and turpentine and in 1810 the whole exterior  would have been painted with 6-8 inch, ox hair box brush, since paint rollers weren’t invented until 1940 and paint prayers were invented until 1823, yes sprayers came before rollers. Today after decades of bad paint jobs and abuse, we started with a low pressure steam clean, because we didn’t want to damage the old sand mortar and pressure washing would blow out the sand mortar and compromise the brick. We applied some detergent, gave the building a scrub and steamed it clean. Then scraped and sanded primed and painted.

When finished we used 210 gallons of McCormick Paints, State house exterior acrylic satin enamel paint for the brick and semi gloss for the doors, windows and trim.
